Quarter 1 – Elements of Art and Principles of Design

 

Circle and Line Composition with Colored Pencil (2-3 periods)

  • Explain how your composition interrupts rhythm

  • Create a balanced composition using contrasting lines and colors

  • Create value with colored pencils

  • Utilize transparent and opaque colors using colored pencils

 

Self Portraits with Contrasting Colors (3 periods)

  • Apply digital design techniques to photo of a face to remove values

  • Identify complementary colors on a color wheel and in artwork

  • Create tints and shades of a complementary hue using tempera paint

  • Identify and emphasize spatial relationships in abstract art

 

Relief Cardboard Sculpture (3 periods)

  • Use assemblage techniques to create a cardboard relief

  • Examine the formal elements found in the artwork of Louise Nevelson

  • Emphasize spatial relationships in abstract art

  • Compare and contrast reliefs from various periods of time

 

Quarter 2 – Space (Showing various depths through Perspective, Size Changes and Mosaics)

 

Two Point Perspective Presents (2 periods)

  • Analyze the use of line to create 2-point perspective

  • Analyze spatial relationships within compositions

  • Analyze the balance created by multiple elements of art (Line, Shape, Color)

 

Mosaic Watercolor (3-4 periods)

  • Experiment with wet on wet, crayon resist, rubbing alcohol and salt watercolor techniques. 

  • Identify opaque and transparent colors within their work and the work of other artists

  • Use assemblage techniques to create a mosaic frog/butterfly/bird or dragonfly

 

Landscape Trees in Black and White (3 periods)

  • Review foreground, middle ground and background within an artwork

  • Create a winter landscape using a limited neutral color palette

  • Practice precision using a paintbrush

 

 

 

 

 

Quarter 3 – Sculpture

 

Magazine Woven Paper Basket (3 periods)

  • Create a woven basket from paper strips

  • Compare and contrast functional and non-functional artwork

  • Compare and contrast baskets of various cultures

  • Develop arguments when viewing artwork from and instrumentalist point of view (Can this art help improve overall life experience?  Is this artwork useful?)

 

Glove Creatures (3 periods)

  • Design and create a humorous creature by repositioning the fingers of a glove and adding other elements

  • Use sewing techniques to create a soft sculpture

  • Explore the artwork of Claus Oldenburg

  • Analyze humor in artwork (incorrect proportions, inappropriate textures or materials)

 

Paper Bead Sculpture or Necklace (2-3 periods)

  • Create a mini sculpture or necklace using paper bead techniques

  • Compare and contrast functional and non-functional artwork

  • Compare and contrast how beads are made in various cultures

 

Quarter 4 – Shading Techniques/Light

 

Apple and Pear Observational Drawings (2 periods)

  • Practice contour line drawing and rendering techniques using pencil and colored pencils

  • Show value by changing pressure and applying color in layers from light to dark.

  • Compare and contrast connections in works that are painted to show value vs. using colored pencil

  • Identify abstract, realistic and non-representational art

 

Full Body Photos with Fantasy Shadow and Ink Shading Techniques (2 periods)

  • Emphasize photographic mood, function and intent

  • Use imagination and alter their shadow to depict an activity

  • Add details to provide a background for the scene (can be real or fantasy)

  • Use hatching, cross hatching, stippling and scribbling techniques to add value

 

Paper Plate Mandalas (3 periods)

  • Analyze and create balance using by line, symmetry and color

  • Analyze spatial relationships within a composition

  • Create a work that has radial symmetry
