Quarter 1 - Elements of Art and Principles of Design

 

Value Composition Paintings  (3 class periods)

  • Identify how line creates rhythm and movement

  • Use tempera paint to create values, tints and shade

  • Identify and create a monochromatic or neutral color schem

  • Classify monochromatic and neutral colors

 

3-D Forms with Charcoal (2-3 class periods)

  • Analyze the use of shading to create 3-D mass

  • Render still-life compositions to emphasize mass

  • Implement value, tints and shades using charcoal on colored paper

 

One-Point Perspective Collage  (3 class periods)

  • Create a one point perspective composition

  • Analyze the elements that create rhythm and unity

  • Analyze the use of line to create one-point perspective

  • Use three elements to create unity (color scheme, texture, line)

 

Quarter 2 – Naturalistic/Realistic vs. Abstract vs.

Non-Representational Art

 

Dry Pastel Toucans (3 class periods)

  • Practice drawing from observation to create a naturalistic image

  • Render naturalistic compositions using dry pastels

  • Analyze and apply the use of shading to create 3-D mass

  • Compare and contrast realistic vs. naturalistic images

 

Colorful Dog (2 class periods)

  • Describe composition using lines, shapes and colors in Fauvist artworks

  • Learn about Fauvists artists

 

Paper Relief Sculpture (1 period)

  • Create a sculpture from altered paper

  • Analyze elements that create rhythm and unity

 

Dragonfly Watercolor (3 class periods)

  • Compare and contrast the use of texture to create naturalistic compositions

  • Use 4 watercolors techniques (salt, wet on wet and crayon-resist)

  • Analyze realistic vs. naturalistic images

  • Evaluate media used in naturalistic works of art

 

 

 

 

Quarter 3 – Exploration of Emotion in Art

 

Moody Sculpture Figures (3 class periods)

  • Interpret the emotional qualities/artist’s intent

  • Analyze how two or more arts combine to express artists message or theme (kinesthetic, text and sculpture)

  • Create a sculpture using wire and paper mache techniques

  • Express emotion using the human figure considering color and text

  • Analyze how the formal elements communicate a message

  • Sketch gesture drawings for inspiration

 

Artist Quote Collage  (3 class periods)

  • Use photojournalistic images

  • Collage using found object, text, imagery

  • Use 3 or more elements to create unity

  • Analyze how the formal elements communicate a message

  • Analyze how art is used in daily life

  • Develop arguments when viewing artwork from a moralist viewpoint. (Is it good art if it teaches us a lesson?)

 

Quarter 4 – Printmaking and Weaving

 

Oil Pastel Peacock (2 class periods)

  • Create prints using brayers and relief blocks

  • Compare and contrast the use of texture to create naturalistic compositions

  • Analyze balance

  • Analyze and apply color, line and shape to create rhythm and unity

 

Yarn Woven Wall Hanging (3 class periods)

  • Create a cohesive weaving using yarn

  • Analyze how weaving is used in daily life

  • Analyze the elements of rhythm and unity in weaving
